Tips For Going on Assignment With Your Furry Travel Companion

As a traveling nurse, LVN/LPN, allied clinician, or therapist, you're always on the move—exploring new cities, adjusting to different hospital settings, and meeting new people along the way. But amidst all the hustle and bustle, one constant can bring a sense of home wherever you go: your dog. In honor of National Dog Day on August 26, we're celebrating the special bond between travel healthcare professionals and their furry friends. Whether you're already sharing your adventures with a canine companion or considering adopting one, this post is for you!

Why Dogs Make the Perfect Travel Nurse Companions

Travel healthcare is a rewarding career, but it can also come with its challenges. Moving from one assignment to another can sometimes feel isolating. This is where a dog can make all the difference. Here’s why dogs are the perfect companions for healthcare travelers:

  1. Unconditional Love and Support: Dogs are known for their loyalty and unconditional love. After a long shift, there's nothing quite like coming home to a wagging tail and a happy face. Your dog doesn’t care about the tough day you've had—they're just excited to see you.
  2. Motivation to Explore: Having a dog is the perfect excuse to get out and explore your new surroundings. Whether it's finding the nearest dog park, hiking a scenic trail, or just taking a leisurely stroll around your neighborhood, your dog will ensure you stay active and adventurous.
  3. Routine and Stability: Traveling as a healthcare professional can sometimes disrupt your daily routine, but dogs thrive on consistency. Their need for regular walks, feedings, and playtime can help ground you in your new environment, providing a sense of normalcy no matter where you are.
  4. Social Connections: Dogs are natural icebreakers. Whether you’re at a dog park or simply out for a walk, having a dog can help you connect with locals. It's a great way to meet people in your new community and build friendships outside of work.

Tips for Traveling with Your Dog

If you’re a travel nurse, LVN/LPN, allied professional, or therapist who’s thinking about bringing your dog along on assignments, here are some tips to make the experience as smooth as possible:

  1. Research Pet-Friendly Housing: Before accepting a travel assignment, make sure to research pet-friendly housing options. Many extended stay hotels, short-term rentals, and RV parks welcome pets, but it’s always a good idea to confirm any pet policies beforehand.
  2. Keep Your Dog’s Records Handy: Always carry your dog’s vaccination records, health certificates, and any necessary medications. Some landlords or rental agencies may require proof of vaccination, and you’ll want to be prepared if your dog needs medical attention while on the road.
  3. Pack for Your Pup: Just like you have your essentials, your dog has theirs too! Bring along their favorite toys, bedding, and food to make them feel at home in any new location. Don’t forget a collapsible water bowl for those road trip stops.
  4. Plan Your Route: If you're driving to your next assignment, plan your route with your dog in mind. Look for pet-friendly rest stops, parks, or dog-friendly attractions along the way. This will give your dog the chance to stretch their legs and burn off some energy.
  5. Find a Local Vet: One of the first things to do when you arrive at a new location is to find a local veterinarian. It’s important to know where to go in case of an emergency and to stay on top of routine care.

Balancing Work and Dog Parenting

Being a healthcare traveler often means working long shifts, which can be a concern when you have a dog. However, with a bit of planning, you can ensure your furry friend is well taken care of while you're at work:

  1. Doggy Daycare and Pet Sitters: Research local doggy daycares or pet-sitting services that can keep your dog entertained while you're at work. Many travelers find this option helpful, especially if their dog is used to being around people or other dogs.
  2. Hire a Dog Walker: If a full day at daycare isn’t necessary, consider hiring a dog walker. A midday walk can break up your dog’s day and give them some much-needed exercise and mental stimulation.
  3. Interactive Toys and Puzzles: If your dog stays home alone during your shifts, invest in some interactive toys or puzzle feeders to keep them engaged. These can help prevent boredom and anxiety.

Celebrating National Dog Day

National Dog Day is the perfect opportunity to spoil your pup. Whether you’re exploring a new city together or just enjoying some downtime, here are a few ways to celebrate:

  • Take a Special Trip: If your assignment location is near a dog-friendly beach, park, or hiking trail, spend the day exploring together. Your dog will love the adventure, and you’ll make some great memories.
  • Treat Them to Something New: Pick up a new toy or treat from a local pet store. Many stores offer special deals or events on National Dog Day, so it’s a great time to try something new.
  • Capture the Moment: Use this day to take some photos of your dog in your current location. Not only will you have adorable pictures to share, but it’s also a fun way to document your journey as a healthcare traveler together.

Traveling with a dog is an incredibly rewarding experience. Your pup offers companionship, helps you explore new places, and can even improve your mental and physical well-being. On this National Dog Day, take a moment to appreciate the joy your dog brings to your life, no matter where your travel nursing career takes you. And if you’re considering adding a furry friend to your journey, there’s no better time than now to welcome a new companion into your life.

Happy National Dog Day to all the traveling clinicians and their beloved canine companions!
